For the past two years, Moving Health Care Upstream’s Policy Learning Lab has provided technical assistance to teams focused on food insecurity in their communities, helping them leverage local and organizational policy to address food insecurity on a community-wide scale. In this newsletter, we feature two resources that have been useful to our teams: the Healthy Food Access Portal and the Hunger Vital Sign National Community of Practice. Working on Health Literacy? Nationwide Children’s Hospital created interactive web-based activities to teach teens (and others) how to assess the trustworthiness of health information sources online. Spurring Innovation: The Role of Child Health Policy

The last 12 months has seen its share of health policy discourse, including discussions on topics that previously enjoyed bi-partisan support. Recent debates about federal and state spending, entitlements, and other issues traditionally fraught with political dispute now have clear implications on child health policy priorities. As experts in child health, Nemours Children’s Health System and AcademyHealth, along with our many partners, have had to think creatively about how to approach policy challenges facing pediatric health. Guns and Opioids in America: Time for a Resilience Revolution

It is truly astounding that we have now reached a point in our nation’s history where opioids kill nearly as many Americans as guns. And the trajectories continue to point upward. We have come to expect, and can even reliably predict, the number of Americans who will die by gun every year — and the rate of consistently high, hyperendemic gun violence in America is alarming. As for opioid deaths, we are not sure if we have reached a peak in the epidemic. These devastating numbers, and the traumas they impose upon families and communities, are uniquely American.
